An old cubicle is now a bold and colorful family home

Old landlords may be the source of many problems, but it’s a special kind of hell when the previous tenant was a toy company. By converting this former office building into a homely homestay, interior designer Nick Olsen had panoramic views of Manhattan, but also some very poor build quality finishes: “They couldn’t justify a long renovation of years.”, says Olsen, “So they said, ‘Decorate as soon as possible!”. Real estate property

Instead of pre-existing frames or architectural transitions, the designer relied on high-level details. Tiles-inspired Iksel wallpaper rolls turn the apartment’s corridor into a carriageway, culminating in a 15-meter-long living room with city views. “When you change rooms, you’re looking for a starting point that is usually architecture,” says Olsen, “but when architecture doesn’t exist, you add it!” Olsen did not dare to overlay bright paint, which could distract the view. Instead, Caba Company’s Barkskin ivory cladding, with its stone motifs, “just happened, but it doesn’t look aggressive.”

Thus, pink chairs, red Moroccan rugs, and serpentine velvet sofas were grouped into small containers to sit on and create a structure for the open space: “You need to create more seating areas or people will come into the room and stay. nervous “. Elsewhere, the color blooms in full dives: Olsen used a bright yellow hand-embroidered suzani quilt in the master bedroom and combined it with a blue and purple sofa that the owner says resembles a sari blouse for which his mother I was used to wearing it.

Despite all his new work, the apartment is now also functional. In the living room, a water-green wool felt by Blatt Billiards was backed with paper so that it could be applied to the walls and absorb the sound. Wall-to-wall carpet also helps with acoustics, offering a tailored alternative to another stretch of oak flooring. The designer says, “All strong gestures need relief.”

How Studio Dearborn has reinvented a dark and narrow kitchen

Sarah Robertson, management consultant turned designer, always approaches her projects with a mindset of being able to do. Take this 1910 Queen Anne to her home in Westchester County in New York, for example: it originally housed a dark and narrow kitchen. The patio, on the other hand, was totally dreamy. The owners then contacted Robertson, whose firm, Studio Dearborn, has specialized in kitchens for more than a decade. Working with Stoll? & Stoll Architects, moved the kitchen to the back of the house, from where it overlooks the vegetation. Real estate property

To enlarge the room, they raised the ceiling line to create a coffered ceiling with wooden panels and added eight windows (whose black-painted frames look like iron for a fraction of the cost). Robertson assigned storage to lower cabinets, drawers and a wall. “We wanted that connection open to the yard,” he explains, “and I like to maximize storage space.” Here, everything has its place, everything hidden inside the cabinets designed by Robertson with Schrocks of Walnut Creek, the substructure painted in Rockport by Benjamin Moore Gray. “It’s a historic house, so this color seemed fairer than white,” says the designer, who opted for Foundryman’s modern hardware and DLV Design for “a cleaner and more transitory atmosphere.” In such a beautiful perspective, why go out?

Cover It Up

Chevron panels in the pantry and the combined Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer create a symmetrical design.

Countertop Storage

“We wanted to make him feel cohesive,” says Robertson on the entire wall of the cabinet. The drop-down panels, complete with Foundryman brass fittings, hide small appliances.

Built-In Pantry

Sandwiches take up a lot of space, so Robertson has designed a pantry with shelves for trays (which are removed so that the objects on the back are easily accessible) to store all types of dry products.

Custom Drawers

Robertson designs all his cabinets with Schrock of Walnut Creek, an Amish company in Ohio. This removable kitchenware cart is located next to the stove.

Hidden Brilliance

Instead of taking another drawer, a drying rack and a cutting board are hidden between the lower cabinets: they slide easily thanks to the sturdy leather rods.

This house is designed around an art collection.

“It was a snowball effect,” says designer Betsy Wentz of the newly completed Victorian 1900 farm in her hometown near Pittsburgh. The historic house was a bit sad when customers hired Wentz, founder of Studio B Interior Design: “The house was not built long ago and there was a loss of dishwasher, which led to a kitchen makeover, which led to redo the whole first floor, “he explains.

The only thing that was in great shape? The client’s art collection. Then Wentz began to create a space that would serve as a suitable backdrop. But if you think it means white walls and bright lighting, think again: Wentz removed art’s color palettes instead and coordinated them with motifs, creating a rich, layered interior all within a few months. Real estate property

Front Hall

“The salon was really kind of an anchor,” says Wentz. “It’s a very precise Victorian black-and-white checkered marble floor with a dark green border. Customers were sure they wanted to get rid of the floor, and I felt that was part of the house’s charm.”

The addition of Cole & Son floral wallpaper to soften the space convinced the customer to maintain the floor, now creating a graphic balance and bold anchoring to super high ceilings.
“It’s such an old house, but we wanted to make it modern and new,” explains the designer.

Family Room

Here, says Wentz, “we chose the colors in the lobby” and then we worked with art. “Much of this really comes from Brazil,” he says. “The owners have lived there for seven years. They have collected a lot of works of art and her husband is French-American and has collected a ton of works of art from France and around the world. So it was a lot of fun to take these paintings and works. with them “. and pull your favorite colors. “

The curtain in the room, for example, comes from the colors of the works of art, but in a fun and abstract way, joining the room without being too obvious.

Study

In the study, a dark gray wall creates an unexpected dramatic and warm backdrop. “I really felt it had to be dramatic there,” says Wentz. “And then we went with very, very, very dark carbon paper, a vinyl paper. This was the room with the worst cracks on the walls. So we repaired the cracks and used a commercial grade vinyl there with a really thin streak. “Wentz calls the room his favorite.

Kitchen

“When it comes to lighting, I think people tend to really emphasize their lighting,” says the designer. “And as for ceiling fixtures, I always say ‘go big or go home’.”

That was the idea in the kitchen, where Wentz hung not one but two large Urban Electric pendants. “Not only do bigger luminaires provide more lighting, but they look good too,” he says. In addition, he notes, “the ceiling is the only space in the house where you usually don’t have much to do unless you hang it. So I think it’s an opportunity to really do something fun.”

Dining Room

Wentz’s secret of giving each room a distinct look within a cohesive feeling? It’s about the bottom. “That’s what I love about wallpaper,” he says. “It makes the room feel lively, even if it’s just a plot, it just gives it a little more weight and a little more depth than paint.”

The modern dining-room card, combined with the traditional frame, embodies the old sensibility of the house, as well as an Urban Electric pendant, which Wentz had dusted with bold turquoise. “It has these beautiful linen shades hanging from a powder-coated turquoise stem,” explains the designer. “So it’s super dramatic, really deep space, makes it super interesting.”

Can you guess what iconic brand logo inspired this house?

Some people have a relationship of hate and love with visible logos, think of Louis Vuitton bags, Hermès blankets and Diptyque candles, but everyone can agree on the undeniable factor of these architectural concepts inspired by the brand by the Polish designer Karina Wiciak Based on the forms of known brands, the founder of Wamhouse Studio has created representations for four modernist residences that re-establish their two-dimensional lines in three-dimensional structures joined by glass and steel. Real estate property

“The idea came to me by accident,” Wiciak recently told Dezeen’s design blog. “One day I just saw a building in the logo. Then I thought other logos are also of great inspiration. I designed them for my pleasure, so it was somehow fun for me.”

Powered by the falling bars of the now iconic Adidas logo and called Trihouse, the first of the series is a four-story structure that uses the negative space created by the symbol’s concrete strips to house open volumes of glass that blur the line between The interior and exterior.

The Chevrolet Bowtie logo provides the framework for the second concept, Crosshouse, a two-story property located on the water (accessible only by boat) and featuring a voyeuristic glass facade.

Another car manufacturer was the inspiration for Rhombhouse, based on the Renault era Deco diamond logo and resembling an imposing vertical profile structure in enameled concrete. The geometric brand of the Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi inspired the final concept, Pyrahouse, which features a pyramidal shape and triangular windows that reveal white and airy spaces.

For now, this is just an impossible dream, but hopefully someone will make an effort to make these sophisticated visualizations. And that copyright isn’t a problem.

10 Types of Kitchen Flooring Materials 6-5 End

concrete

If you are looking for an industrial style, concrete is an excellent choice for kitchen floors. It is low maintenance and durable, but can be difficult to install. You will have to work with an engineer to make sure your home can support the weight of a concrete floor. Real estate property

Stone tile

Stone is one of the most elegant materials for kitchen floors and often has a price that matches. But there is a wide range of stones that have different prices, from slate to limestone and marble. As a nature-resistant material, it adapts perfectly to kitchens, even if it is a little harder under the feet than synthetic materials and hardwood.

Ceramic tiles

With perhaps the widest variety of styles of all flooring materials, ceramic tiles can be customized to fit any space. They are popular in kitchens because of their resistance, but like stone tiles, they are hard underfoot. Grout lines are also a major concern, as they can easily get dirty.

Terracotta Tiles

Although terracotta is technically a ceramic material, terracotta is composed of a reddish clay which gives it its characteristic tone, which distinguishes it among its cousins. Color variations can vary from beige to carbon. When considering terracotta tiles for your kitchen, be sure to choose a high density material, as low density ones are porous and sensitive to stains and water damage.

linoleum

Although the idea of linoleum could evoke visions of his grandmother’s retro kitchen, the floor material has gained popularity. Unlike its vinyl brothers, linoleum is made of natural materials and is quite ecological. It provides a lightness that makes it quite comfortable, but it can dent and discolor over time.

10 Types of Kitchen Flooring Materials 1-5

hardwood

Wooden floors are an always popular option for kitchens, since they are available in a range of colors to suit your aesthetics. It looks a little softer under the feet than the tiles and can be finished if it wears a little. The only negative is that it can be expensive, depending on the type of wood. Real estate property

laminate

Laminate is a convenient alternative to hardwood: it is a synthetic floor made of layers of resin and wood fiber that comes in a variety of styles, often imitating wood or ceramics. Although the material has a more superficial appearance than hardwood, it is extremely durable and easy to install on its own.

vinyl

Like laminate, vinyl is a durable, waterproof and reasonably priced synthetic floor material. Not only is it available in numerous styles, but it also has two forms: vinyl sheet, which is rolled up on large sheet flooring, and vinyl tile, which can mimic ceramics.

cork

You may be more familiar with corks as a stopper in your wine bottle or as a pin table, but the environmentally friendly material can also be used as a floor. It is particularly ideal for kitchens, as it provides a comfortable feeling, like a cushion under the feet. Cork must be finished to protect it from spills and, like hardwood, can be finished if it is to be repaired.

bamboo

As with cork, bamboo is a renewable resource, so it can be used as an ecological option for the floor. Although it is actually an herb, bamboo works like hardwood in terms of flooring. While it is susceptible to scratches, it can be restored.

INDUSTRIAL

While the name evokes an urban atmosphere with warehouse and factory elements, it is no surprise that industrial interior design practices lend a clean, somewhat masculine, minimalist spirit to any environment. Think of a combination of neutral colors, recycled machinery, shades of color, rough woods and unfinished metals and, in the end, a return to the past with a slightly steampunk feel. Real estate property

That said, we do not recommend entering the industry when considering the best interior design styles for small homes, as this is an aesthetic that requires a lot of room to breathe elements inspired by machines that are usually too large. However, you can inject small doses of the design movement as you look at industrial interior design styles by incorporating the decorative rough metal extras on a shelf here or in a small corner there.

ECLECTIC

Similar to bohemian furniture but with decidedly adult charm, the eclectic interior design is based on high energy finds and accessories and spells. Think of bold color palettes, textures, and motifs brought together to create a rich mix with utility and focal points in mind.

WAYS TO STYLE A GREY SOFA IN YOUR HOME Part 2 End

LIGHTING

Lighting is an essential part of your living room and you must have at least one fountain that has been specially designed to be combined with your gray sofa. In this family room on the Upper West Side, we place two lamps on each side of this gray sofa: a larger lamp for a basic lighting layer and a reading table lamp.
This will also help to avoid the exclusive use of indirect clinical and cold lighting, helping to create an attractive and inviting lighting scheme. Real estate property

INSTALLATIONS

When modeling the sofa, be sure to include some vertical design elements that contrast with the horizontal arrangement of the sofa. One way to do this is to line the sofa with tall plants.

In this pre-war bachelor block, we placed two plants on either side of this gray sofa, drawing attention to a tasteful gallery wall. Another way is to bring large-scale pieces of botanical artwork that define the room to really make a memorable statement if you weren’t blessed with a natural green thumb.

CARPET AREA

Rugs are a great way to add some necessary textures or patterns to your space. And to keep your space together, get an area rug that incorporates the colors found elsewhere in your design scheme.

UNEXPECTED COLOR

Add a sense of the unexpected, bringing indulgent colors even in the smallest doses. While about 95% of the aforementioned design thrives in various shades of gray, an equally subtle and soft pink chair has been added as an attractive element to make the living room even more memorable and unique.

A VIBRATING MIX

For this eclectic Brooklyn family home, our interior designer used the plum gray sofa pictured above as a starting point to add harmony to a litany of the many elements and features that our client was thinking about.

As you can see, it works to tie everything together brilliantly, unlike any other colored sofa. Imagine the visual noise you would hear if the sofa was fiery red or how you would lose yourself in the room if it was pure white.

BE PLAYABLE

Who says a gray sofa means all business and no jokes? As we did in this family in Old Greenwich, CT, use a gray sofa to fight more fun items like children’s toys housed in this game room.

Your gray sofa will end up doing its double duty as an anchor for all the various elements it loves to play with and will be able to resist stains much better than a lighter colored sofa has ever been able to.

SYMMETRY STICK

While gray evokes a sense of balanced strength, go up a step and follow completely symmetrical with the arrangement of the furniture for a uniform and uniform feeling.

This will make it easier for you to decorate your gray sofa than to compete with it. The key here is to find ways to incorporate visual interest without being distracted. Once again, this is where the strength of the cushions and prints comes into play, because the room presented above would be undeniably cold without them.

KEEP SIMPLE

Play a chord with your elegant gray sofa, keeping the rest of the room simple and decorated with a light hand to keep everything within reach while you still stimulate it.

For the project presented above, our interior designer reflected the rigid lines of the gray sofa with vertical cushions, as well as the furniture and accessories that followed. The key here was to compensate for the rigor of the setup with abstract elements such as watercolor hanging on the gray sofa and various accessories throughout.

GO TONAL

Since a gray sofa is a standard accessory in any home with a minimal design, extend your Spartan charm with a range of scattered shaded grays to create a relaxing vision of cozy minimalism.

To accentuate the decidedly gray direction of our San Francisco project, our interior designer emphasized the gray focus of the living rooms, placing dark gray blue screens behind the TV as a stimulating background full of energy and spirit.

COASTAL

While we don’t like themed interior design styles of any kind, there is something new and reassuring about a modified mix of coastal elements and beach houses that bring a room together. Real estate property

The design notes of the coastal interiors present bright, bright and airy environments, often dreamed of vibrant neutrals for sunbathing. Common coastal color palettes include ocean-inspired shades of blue and light green, along with a variety of creams and neutrals for a relaxed and elegant finish.

Our favorite coastal-inspired designs, such as this San Francisco residence, often feature contemporary interior design styles to give an unexpectedly contemporary aesthetic to aesthetics.

HOLLYWOOD REGION

Popular between the 1940s and 1960s and the mid-1990s, the Hollywood Regency is one of the most timeless and fun decor styles around, delightfully combining Art Deco-inspired touches and silhouettes with an adult sense of high glamor. polished. Imagine a mix of vintage French furniture, clean lines, touches of vibrant colors and ultra glamorous notes carried through surfaces and finishes in crystal, mirror and polish.

Although it can be considered an option for traditional-style interior design, there is nothing old-fashioned about Hollywood Regency’s interior design styles for us, but it always has a modern and optimistic energy.

SCANDINAVIAN

The increasingly popular Scandinavian interior design styles emphasize a clean and serene simplicity with universal appeal. Fully functional and minimalist, Scandinavian decor highlights organic shapes with subtle interest, tonal-textured pieces and relaxed charm in completely white grayscale spaces. The color tips are carried through the art and a single fabric such as a small throw or carpet.

One of the easiest contemporary interior design styles to master, Scandinavian interior design is a balanced and carefully curated mix of elements. While there are many trends in interior design styles that follow the suggestions of Scandinavian interior design styles, it is about speeding up, as this is a design movement worth looking at.

MODERN URBAN

For the best of cosmopolitan life, modern urban design is perfect for the urban skyscraper, as it combines the best of contemporary, modern and industrial luxury influences for an inspirational and timeless approach to decor. Think of the Big Apple with a fascinating mix of chic chic from different eras brought together to create a home that makes a statement.

Bohemian

One of the most timeless and infinitely popular interior design styles on the market, bohemian furniture represents a care and freedom without problems that is undoubtedly intoxicating and intoxicating. With a comfortable and globally inspired blend of exotic artifacts and antique and antique furniture from travel and passionate flea market trips, the eclectic style also touches the suggestions of daily glamor through crystal extras, bead fabrics, jewel tones and Relaxed mood.

If you are already blessed with a varied variety of distinctive furniture and admire the idea of ??beautifully rendered juxtapositions, it might just be the perfect living room to consider for interior design styles.

MODERN MIDDLE CENTURY

Arguably one of the most prolific interior design styles of all time, mid-century hipster borrows from the best of the 50’s and 60’s for a clear, retro Danish-inspired vibe. Simple straight silhouettes, organic shapes, quiet manufacturing and an emphasis on functionality are hallmarks of mid-century modern style. That said, minimally curved movements make it a great choice when trying to easily upgrade traditional-style interior design.

In addition, mid-century modern furnishings look good in almost every room and create great elements when trying to create a rich and diverse room with interior design styles. And as for trends in interior design styles, it’s a fail-safe that we recommend you try.

WAYS TO STYLE A GREY SOFA IN YOUR HOME Part 1

Some interior design blogs say that a gray sofa is boring or not original. However, ask any interior designer to evaluate the ever popular trend of gray sofas and they will surely disagree. In fact, a gray sofa has greater decorating potential than any other piece of furniture in your home. Think of a gray sofa as a white canvas with an infinite number of possible decorative combinations. Real estate property

PILLOW

The first step in decorating your sofa should always be with cushions. And with a gray sofa, we recommend one layer of glossy cushions and another layer of cushions with an opaque fabric.

Choose the glossy cushions that echo the colors found in other parts of the room, as we did in this luxurious transition design. And add a central declaration cushion to act as a focal point.

THROWS

When the warmer seasons arrive, opt for thin and thin knitted blankets to revive the spirits and energize an environment. And when it’s cold, accumulate more comforting moves to stay warm and welcoming.

Economic rugs can be changed easily when seasons and trends change, so try unexpected combinations and see what’s left. Choose a color or material that contrasts with the fabric of your sofa, as we did in this skyscraper full of light.

COFFEE TABLE

In any interior design scheme, it is important to consider the shape and outline of your furniture. So if you have a square sofa, consider a side table with a little curve.

In this SoHo duplex, we purchased a stone-shaped coffee table from the Phillips collection to balance the corner elements of the room. And if you have a small space to work, nothing is better than tables with a glass top that will help you avoid visually bulky alternatives while remaining easy to use.

FINAL TABLES

The creation of a gray sofa is creating visually striking contrasts. That’s why we inserted the velvet sofa in this mid-century building with matching wooden tables for a visual texture.

As on the bedside tables, place the matching pieces on both sides of the sofa and extend some roller coasters while you’re on it.

BASKETS

To prevent your sofa from looking casual, put it all together with some baskets. At the end of the tables, we place bamboo baskets on both sides of the leather sofas in this elegant Union Square loft.

ART

Art is an integral part of every stay. And when modeling a gray sofa, make sure that the accessories refer to the colors of the artwork. Notice in this luxury condominium in San Francisco how the cushions echo the colors in the client’s artwork.

20 INTERIOR DESIGN STYLES DEFINED IN 2019 part 1

MINIMALISTA

One of the most modern interior design styles to consider, people often tend to confuse minimalism with severe coldness and uncomfortable gravity, which is not the case at all. In fact, there is also a warmer version of minimalist interior design (warm minimalism) which is full of clean and simple elegance. Think of simplicity, refinement and a skillful hand in sumptuous comfort and functionality. The key here is to keep the rooms simple and well-kept with unprinted fabrications and decorating extras that should have a dual purpose. Real estate property

When you think of the minimalist trends in interior design styles, think of a gallery or museum of modern art as a reference to your common approach to fill a space with the bases that still presents a vivid sense of drama, organic or abstract.

CONTEMPORARY

Although people often tend to confuse modern interior design styles with contemporary interior design, there is a difference between the two that makes them unique in themselves.

The contemporary style is completely of the moment, while modern interior design styles can mean almost anything with a vision of the future from the 50s to the early years. Trends in contemporary interior design styles also have more freedom, since the modern is usually set on square lines, graphics and a particular vision of modernity.

TRADITIONAL

When it comes to interior design styles, almost everything is based on traditional interior design ideas and for good reason. That said, you can make the interior design of the traditional style your own by incorporating pieces that speak to your personality and lifestyle while making a statement.

Take the room above, make sure it has a depth and layers, a traditional overloaded beige sofa, a Persian rug and the necessary Louis VI chair, however, what sets it apart from any other traditional room is the updated contemporary lamp and the beginning of the conversation. artwork

TRANSITION

Of course, after exploring the meaning of traditional interior design styles and then seeing the following image above, you probably wonder what the difference is between traditional and transitional interior design.

What sets transitional interior design ideas apart are the combinations of a tried and true decorating style using traditional furniture mixed with modern elements that prevent a room from looking too much of a particular style. This is especially useful if you are looking to combine interior design styles after getting married, or if you are moving to a larger house.

The best of transition-style interior design has balance in the unexpected mix, while providing a familiar warmth and a relaxed feeling.

RUSTIC

Inspired from the outside and a combination of agricultural and industrial interior design styles, the rustic decorations emphasize natural and worn finishes, raw wood, stone and leather, with unexpected touches and a sophisticated inclination in general.

We love the way the room shown above combines a varied combination of eye-catching furniture like soft custom Sherpa sofas, industrial-inspired wire pendants and unique leather chairs. That said, we are committed to modern interior design styles that combine different elements to create a beautifully crafted and unique room.

FRENCH COUNTRY

Similar to modern transitional interior design styles, French Country is a hybrid mix of ancient, shabby chic and agricultural French interior design elements, full of fresh and adult charm.

For your home, take note of the room above with your vintage sofa, the renewed Louis VI chairs with a modern mid-century geometric print, an eclectic mix of works of art and a minimalist coffee table, as it is of a varied but well-judged mixture of juxtapositions.

SHABBY CHIC

After gaining huge popularity in the mid-80s and 90s as one of the best interior design styles when trying to evoke the tranquility of California, shabby chic eventually received some violent reaction from being badly labeled. as a decoration of the grandmother, which is completely fake

To begin with, shabby chic has its roots in antique and vintage French design and furnishings with a decidedly comfortable touch and, above all, it has a timeless charm inspired by the era. Soft and slightly feminine, shabby chic

  • DARK GREENS

Officially called “night clock” and one of the best Pantone paint colors for 2019, the tone is basically a new interpretation of the rich hunter green that didn’t seem so viable since its last time in the spotlight of interior design in the 90’s.

From off to changing, this intense green trend can work to emulate the feeling of lush botanicals and the healing power of nature in your home, setting the tone with a strong fundamental tone. To get ideas on the color of hunter green and bottle green paint, our interior designers suggest that this trend should be reserved for large, well-lit rooms, since their intensity can overwhelm small spaces and obscure them.

Michelle Nussbaumer The fantastic pink Pantry is legendary stuff

Even the word itself sounds blah: a dark space, low ceiling, wall to wall full of cans of dry and beige canned food, somehow preserved to survive a nuclear apocalypse.Real estate property. But, as anyone familiar with Michelle Nussbaumer ‘s delightfully maximalist style knows, there is no room for the boring in the talented hands of the designer. In his project for House Beautiful’s Kitchen (or, we should say, Kitchens – it’s four o’clock) of the year, Nussbaumer proves it by making us lose our minds for a humble pantry – well, two.

Obviously, a pantry of the woman who commissioned a custom mural to go over her workbench and wrap the Ikea furniture in an ikat print of her design is not an outdated refuge. In a design inspired by none other than Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen – nothing says to elevate the ordinary that infuse a little royalty into your storage cabinet – Nussbaumer has designed a majestic portico of shelves for pink dishes to contain the dishes. his mother’s porcelain, arranged around a quartet of hand-painted terrines. Along the two side walls of the pantry, the pink shelves contain even more porcelain, including some inherited from Nussbaumer ‘s grandmother, who, according to the designer, “loves to blend with Target dishes”. A chevron graphic floor adds a touch of decoration.

The cabinets in the deco kitchen are like nothing you’ve ever seen.

The first time designer Nina Farmer stepped on her clients’ English-style home in 1904, outside Boston, she was struck by the period features: finely carved frames, leaded windows, large mahogany shelves. Unfortunately, none of this extended to the kitchen. An earlier renovation had stripped him of all the original details, leaving a sea of cherry cabinets. “It didn’t look like the rest of the house, so we had to find a way to reinstate it,” says Farmer. The question was how. Real estate property

“With all this wood elsewhere, the stained furniture would look heavy, but not even a typical white kitchen would be adequate,” he says. So he split the difference by combining a stained Art and Craft-inspired frame with two-tone painted fronts. A small Art deco detail – most noticeable on the custom hood with brass accents – offers a touch of glamor. “It was definitely an experiment on our part, so the customers had to trust us!” Farmer says, laughing. “But part of it and part of it ended up feeling totally current.”

Inside the Leanne Ford Rock the Block house

HGTV’s popular competition program, Rock the Block, started with a simple concept: throwing four stars to improve your homes to transform identical Los Angeles suburban homes into single homes with higher property values. After four weeks of aesthetic athletics – and the creative use of a $ 175,000 budget – the houses that emerged were far from basic. Jasmine Roth of Hidden Potential may have won the competition with honors, but we were impressed with Leanne Ford’s minimalist cocoon. Real estate property

To personalize the cookie cutters, Ford embraced the property’s concrete floor and existing plant, but used much of his budget to reinvent the kitchen, where he demonstrated the upper cabinets to install an impressive mortar-washed stone wall. that infuses space with age and organic texture. “The biggest challenge for me has been to bring character and warmth to a new building,” says Ford. “I did it by adding tons of natural materials, wabi-sabi style textures, tiles and great lighting.” Restored by the Fords star and his brother Steve he also tore the door panels of the existing lower wardrobes, replacing them with metal grids to give the room a more airy appearance; the granite counter tops have been removed to make room for unexpected (and indestructible) formica surfaces.

Although it left the other rooms practically intact, Ford’s treatment of the main suite was equally dramatic. He knocked down the wall that separated the bedroom and bathroom to create an open, high-level concept with a direct line of sight, using a stable door for privacy and separation. The new bathroom has a separate Native Trails bathtub and a shower covered with shiny herringbone tiles, but one key component is missing: the doors. It is a visually appealing detail that is also inexpensive, as are the beams added to the great room and the patterned patio floors. “I didn’t want to dilute the budget or the vision,” says Ford.
